Chris Johanson just opened a new show at Altman Siegel in San Francisco, "Equations," which made us want to revisit an excerpt from our 2014 feature with this prolific and highly influential artist.

Life experience is elusive in a world filled with image hoarding, obsessive sharing of photography, and a visual cacophony so packed that claustrophobia chokes and engulfs. It is a visual barrage barely removed from the anxiety-filled rhythm that is this overwhelming life. It is noteworthy and interesting to view contemporary work by a photographer that dances with this rhythm, but seeks to participate with a quieter visual poetry.

Everyone's favorite object-based periodical, The Thing Quarterly, just kicked off their new T-Shirt series, an artist-designed shirt that will be announced two-three times a year and only available online via pre-order. Their inagural shirt is by the one and only Chris Johanson (featured May, 2014), known for his paintings, sculptures, and interactive environments - sometimes constructed as mazes - that explore the human experience and the physical world people inhabit together.

Jux contributor Kristin Farr just produced a new video for KQED and SFMOMA that reflects on a golden age for contemporary art in San Francisco’s Mission District. Several influential artists who lived and worked in or near the Mission in the ’90s became internationally known, and many of our favorites have been featured in the pages of Juxtapoz.

The San Francisco Bay Area has been without its modern art institution for a couple of years now, as the physical space that is the SFMOMA has been closed for an addition to its existing building. The benefits of the closure has been spread out across various spaces around the SF area, whether at the Cantor at Stanford, the Wattis in SF, or even the Asian Art Museum here in the City as well. All the shows have been strong in their own way, but the newest SFMOMA On the Go exhibition, "Fertile Ground," brings together SFMOMA and the Oakland Museum of California for a theme that makes perfect: Art made in the SF Bay Area.
