Book Release: "Paper Birds Lost Faces" by Monica Canilao

Oakland-based artist Monica Canilao just released a brand new book, "Paper Birds Lost Faces" (published by Chandran Gallery) this past weekend at the New York Art Book Fair, and now its available for sale around the world. Printed in California in a limited edition of 1000, the book features a collection of the recent works featuring birds that Canilao has been working on for the last year. Get it while its hot!

What started during Art Basel week in South Beach inside the Chandran Gallery x Juxtapoz Beach House exhibition and installation space, with the UNIV team's surf craft workshop in the backyard, came to a close today as the special benefit auction for Waves for Water ended with a fantastic amount of bidding from around the world! Juxtapoz, Chandran, and UNIV cannot be any more pleased to donate to the Waves For Water charity and their continuted efforts to bring clean, usable drinking water to areas of the world in need. Especially, we want to thank each artist for their donation of time, energy, and art for the project. Here are the photos from the one-night exhibition at TFR Gallery in Encinitas, a few blocks away from the UNIV Workshop.

As we have mentioned over the past few weeks, RETNA has contributed a surfboard to the Chandran Gallery x Juxtapoz x Univ benefit auction for Waves for Water, an organization on the ground in the Philippines, mobilizing an urgent clean water disaster relief initiative in the aftermath of Super Typhoon Haiyan. Through March 31st, a special curated selection of hand-painted surfboards will be available at auction on Paddle8.

Last night, Juxtapoz and Chandran Gallery opened a special exhibition, installation, and performance art piece at the Beach House in the Shore CLub South Beach, featuring works amazing installation and performace from Monica Canilao and Sorne, paintings by Jason Jagel, special beach robes and towels by Geoff McFetridge, poolside decor by Richard Colman, lobby installation by Andrew Schoultz, and pool floating canoe by all the artists.

As we noted on the site recently, Juxtapoz and Chandran Gallery are presenting a special art gallery exhibition and installation series at the Shore Club in Miami Beach during the Art Basel week festivities, December 5—7. Amongst a few parties (and a special performance by the Black Lips on Thursday, December 5), Andrew Schoultz will be creating a special installation on the Shore Club property, expanding upon an installation the San Francisco-based fine artist created at the Monterey Museum of Art this past summer.

Mary Iverson Paints Container in Singapore

Last week, Juxtapoz was given a special invitation to accompany Seattle-based fine artist, Mary Iverson, as she flew to Singapore with Chandran Gallery to exhibit and complete a public mural at the city-state's Goodman Arts Centre. Perfect for the work that she has been creating over the past few years, Iverson was commissioned to paint a shipping container on the school's grounds, a unique opportunity that coinciding with an overall theme of Singapore; shipping.

We got a little sneak peek into Iron To Gold/Ashes To Hope, the special benefit exhibition, installation, and auction in support of an innovative artist-in-residence program in Detroit that Juxtapoz is helping sponsor in collaboration with Chandran Gallery in San Francisco. The artists organizing the event, Monica Canilao and friends, are Bay Area based artists who have since moved and started a residency program in Detroit to bring together fellow artists from around the country to have a meeting place for collaborative projects and creative development.
