Cathie Bleck will be opening a new exhibition, "Avance," at Firecat Projects in Chicago this evening. The new pieces (over 30 paintings, journals and stone lithographs) are part of an ongoing series that explores the vulnerable nature of the human spirit and its immense resilience in the face of adversity," Bleck told us. "We continually pose questions like, “Now what? What will be? What will I do? When will it happen?" Back in 2012, we featured artist Cathie Bleck in our August issue showing her paintings of fantastical worlds. Now we see her on a much smaller scale with beautiful simplistic intentions for a timeless art space. USPS commissioned her to create an image for a stamped card in celebration of the start of Spring. Fittingly, Bleck created a soft lively looking tree since she has always felt a connection to them from her childhood.

When researching Mary Blair for our May issue we immediately recognized a kindred spirit in Juxtapoz’s August 2012 feature painter Cathie Bleck who shares a magical realism with the natural world expressed in fluid lines. Cathie shares an early remembrance of the artist who will be featured at the Walt Disney Family Museum’s celebration of Camille Rose Garcia who also cites the influence of Mary Blair. The exhibition opens on Thursday, May 9th.

This Saturday, March 24. Copro Gallery in Santa Monica will be opening our 18th Birthday exhibition, Juxtapoz Turns 18.
