Is this not the best thing Barry McGee has ever been a part of, a fake bonfire with teenagers interviewing him? The Teen Arts Council in Boston began their “Around the Campfire” artist interview series and starting strong they had McGee participant. Endearing and sincere.

Over the years, Art21 has been putting together a number of insightful pieces with short video interviews from Barry McGee, something the artist has been known to shy away from. In this newest segment, Mcgee aka Twist discuses his continued fascination with tagging, nighttime graffiti culture, and the risks others take to do graffiti.

Last night, we attended the opening of a special exhibition at City College in San Francisco, (Almost) Free Formed, featuring collaborative works of former City College students Barry McGee, Chris Johanson, and Laurie Reid. The quiet, intimate night was highlighted by the trio's organization and layout of the show, and also gave notice to the importance of SF's City College to some of the most successful and influential artists to come out of San Francisco in recent decades.

City College of San Francisco will exhibit works of art from three talented Californian artists. Chris Johanson, Barry McGee, and Laurie Reid will display recent solo and collaborative work. Additionally, they will come together to design and arrange the exhibition to create a sense of connection and community that they feel symbolizes their experience as students at City College.

Yesterday morning, Juxtapoz attended the press preview and brunch to honor the opening of the grand ol' fair, Art Basel Miami Beach, the reason why many fairs have grown around Miami during the first week of December. Housing some of the most established galleries in the world (Lisson, Gagosian, Marlborough to name a few), we tried to make our experience the same as we do each year. Just get lost in it all...

Published in conjunction with Barry McGee's retrospective at the Berkeley Art Museum and Pacific Film Archive, on display through December 9, 2012, there is a fantastic catalog available now through D.A.P. Over 400 pages, hardcover, this to us feels like the most definitive McGee book to date, with essential photos of early streets works in San Francisco, and some of McGee's most important installation and sculptural works produced.

Yesterday we attended the opening party and press preview of ArtPadSF at the Phoenix Hotel, a unique art fair situated around a pool with each gallery occupying a hotel room surrounding an open courtyard. Galleries such as New Image Art, Robert Berman, the Luggage Store, 111 Minna, Gregory Lind all had strong "rooms," showcasing a blend of both classics and up-and-coming talents.

We stopped by the opening reception for Barry McGee’s latest solo exhibition at Prism Gallery in Los Angeles this past weekend. The exhibition featured a new series of drawings, paintings, prints, sculptures and photographs from the famed San Francisco-based artist.  Photos and more after the jump….

Barry McGee will make a return visit to show at Prism Gallery in Los Angeles tonight, May 11, 2012, with a large portion of work created at the gallery itself. In 2009, McGee held an exhibition for the gallery's inaugural exhibition, titled MindTheGap. Since then, the gallery has gone on to show many renowned international artists including David LaChapelle, Os Gemeos, Ryan McGinness, Andy Warhol, Araki, and a bunch more. This one should garner a ton of attention.
