The European season has been kicking off over the past few weeks, and we just got a look at what V1 Gallery of Copenhagen has going on at the Art Basel week festivities, with a booth of Geoff McFetridge, Todd James, and HuskMItNavn works at the Volta9 fair. If you are in Europe and have a plan to be in Basel, Switzerland for the weekend, we definitely think you should check out this booth featuring some of Juxtapoz' current favorites. 

This past week, Juxtapoz took a trip to Hong Kong to both celebrate the inaugural Art Basel Hong Kong art fair, as well as spend time with the Converse team and their curated guest list of artists for their Wall to Wall Hong Kong project. Over the past few years, Converse has worked with artists from around the world to create over twenty Wall to Wall projects throughout Europe and North America. For Hong Kong, Converse brought artists from Berlin, China, Brazil, and France to complete the project. Today, we look at the wall completed by the Shenzen-based IDT Crew. 

Art Basel Hong Kong, the inaugural edition of Basel in Asia, had a ton of sculpture and installation works throughout the fair. One of the ones we loved especially was Jakarta-based sculptor Ichwan Noor's transforming, fusing, morphing five vintage 1953 Volkswagen Beetles into these crazy installed spheres. This one was in the Mondecor Jakarta Gallery booth, and on sale for $88k.

Another highlight from the Art Basel Hong Kong week was Takashi Murakami's new exhibition at Galerie Perrotin in central Hong Kong. In celebration of the gallery's 20-year relationship with Mr Murakami, this is the Japanese artist's 9th showing with Perrotin. This particular new body of work features Murakami's "famous alter-ego Mr. Dob and self-portraits of the artist surrounded by his emblematic characters including Kaikai and Kiki with epure backgrounds of skulls pattern."

Not that we want to deter you from looking at these images, but no picture will do this exhibition justice. I can go on and on about how intriguing the work is, how the Chapman brothers have perhaps made the biggest noise during Basel week in Hong Kong, but even that would not give enough credit to how incredible the diorama pieces of The Sum of All Evil really are.

Art fairs, especially when you get on the circuit like we have been over the past few years, can be overwhelming. Art Basel Hong Kong is no different. There is a ton to see, lots of new galleries to read up on, maybe some similar artists, but mostly this is a crash course in over 50 Asian galleries that we didn't have first-hand experience with.

This week in China kicked off the first edition of Art Basel Hong Kong, the world's most famed art fair that has already taken over Basel, Switzerland in June each year and Miami in December. This particular edition focuses primarily on Asia and Asia-Pacific galleries, given us at Juxtapoz a chance to see new talent and new artists that we have yet to see in person. Yesterday, we took a walk through the first floor of the Hong Kong EXPO center...

With a stunning backdrop, 79 floors above Hong Kong, we attended the special pop-up gallery show of Retna and Keith Haring tonight in Hong Kong during the Art Basel festivities. Featuring iconic Haring works mixed with new works by Los Angeles-based Retna, the works played in unison of a both an exploration of language and unique character construction.
