This past weekend we stopped by New Image Art for the opening of Chad Muska’s first solo show. “Chad Muska comes from a long tradition of professional skateboard artists (Mark Gonzales, Ed Templeton, Chris Johanson, Natas Kaupas, and Neil Blender, among others) who have devoted their lives, both on and off the board, to a journey of creativity and discovery. The title of Chad’s first show, “Transitions,” is a word that not only stems from the curved surfaces skateboarders ride on in pools, parks, and ramps, but it’s also a reference to the skateboard lifestyle which is defined by movement from place to place, and from one state of mind to the next.  Photos and more after the jump…

This past weekend we stopped by Blum & Poe for the opening of Takashi Murakami’s latest solo exhibition “Arhat.” This is the first time Mr Murakami has shown in the United States since his travelling survey from 2007-09,  and what we saw was a fantastic series of new paintings and sculptures that remind us of the playful nature of the Japanese artist's work. We recently stopped by Michael Kohn Projects inaugural exhibition a collection of recent paintings by artist Marion Peck. This special project space, which is located within blocks of the Michael Kohn Gallery, features eleven new works that highlight the artist’s talent for meticulously painted narrative imagery.
