This past weekend we stopped by New Image Art for the opening of Chad Muska’s first solo show. “Chad Muska comes from a long tradition of professional skateboard artists (Mark Gonzales, Ed Templeton, Chris Johanson, Natas Kaupas, and Neil Blender, among others) who have devoted their lives, both on and off the board, to a journey of creativity and discovery. The title of Chad’s first show, “Transitions,” is a word that not only stems from the curved surfaces skateboarders ride on in pools, parks, and ramps, but it’s also a reference to the skateboard lifestyle which is defined by movement from place to place, and from one state of mind to the next.  Photos and more after the jump…

This past weekend we stopped by Martha Otero Gallery for the opening of Pedro Matos’ first Los Angeles solo exhibition. Building Castles Made of Sand featuring a new series of oil paintings on canvas and Azulejo panels - a traditional Portuguese medium of hand-painted, tin-glazed, ceramic tile work. This past weekend we stopped by Corey Helford Gallery for the opening reception of “Japanese Ideology of Puberty,” Kazuki Takamatsu’s latest solo exhibition.  We interviewed Kazuki in our new May 2013 issue, which you can read right here and learn how he develops and creates these incredible paintings with computer graphics. This past weekend we stopped by Blum & Poe for the opening of Takashi Murakami’s latest solo exhibition “Arhat.” This is the first time Mr Murakami has shown in the United States since his travelling survey from 2007-09,  and what we saw was a fantastic series of new paintings and sculptures that remind us of the playful nature of the Japanese artist's work. The three constants in Hanni El Khatib’s life that are all responsible for one another. This past weekend we stopped by Merry Karnowsky Gallery for the opening of Greg ‘Craola’ Sminkins latest exhibition, “Stop Haunting Me, 20 Years.” As the gallery notes, "In this latest exhibition, Simkins’ dream creations have awoken, fully conscious and yet confined to two-dimensional canvas and paper surfaces. The bulk of their animal shapes are closely entwined in phantasmagorical scenes laced with rich narrative and haunting personification." Photos and more after the jump…

We recently stopped by Michael Kohn Projects inaugural exhibition a collection of recent paintings by artist Marion Peck. This special project space, which is located within blocks of the Michael Kohn Gallery, features eleven new works that highlight the artist’s talent for meticulously painted narrative imagery. This particular body of work explores solitary animal figures placed in various situations and often anthropomorphized to reflect human emotion and mental states. Photos and more after the jump…
