We stopped by the opening reception for Chris Johanson’s latest exhibition “Within The River of Time Is My Mind” currently on view at MOCA Pacific Design Center. Organized by guest curator Andrew Berardini, the exhibition features new paintings, sculpture, and found wood site-specific installation. Known for his figurative work that features text, the exhibition will highlight the kaleidoscopic color and angles that Johanson employs. Photos and more after the jump . . .

In L.A.: Tonight We Fight @ New Image Art

This past weekend we stopped by New Image Art for the opening reception of “Tonight We Fight,” a group show curated by Luke Pelletier.  The show featured the works of  Ben Jensen, Dillon Froelich, Eric McHenry, John Malta, Luke Pelletier, Michael Hsiung, Mildred, Miles Jackson, Nathan Brown, Pacolli, Sean Morria, Teddy Kelly and Yarrow Slaps, exploring the conflicts, compromises, shared opportunities, collaborations, and joint efforts, or lack there of, involved in working, alongside others, towards a common goal. Photos and more after the jump…

In L.A.: Empty Distances @ Mark Moore Gallery

This past weekend we stopped by Mark Moore Gallery for the opening reception of “Empty Distances” a group show curated by Caryn Coleman. The group exhibition features works by James Aldridge, Darren Banks, Sean Higgins, Deborah Stratman, Alan Warburton, and a selection of episodes from "The Twilight Zone." Playing on Eugene Thacker's idea of horror as the "paradoxical thought of the unthinkable," Coleman has meticulously composed a show that illustrates the visualization and simultaneous abstraction of the unknown. Photos and more after the jump…

In L.A.: Chad Muska @ New Image Art

This past weekend we stopped by New Image Art for the opening of Chad Muska’s first solo show. “Chad Muska comes from a long tradition of professional skateboard artists (Mark Gonzales, Ed Templeton, Chris Johanson, Natas Kaupas, and Neil Blender, among others) who have devoted their lives, both on and off the board, to a journey of creativity and discovery. The title of Chad’s first show, “Transitions,” is a word that not only stems from the curved surfaces skateboarders ride on in pools, parks, and ramps, but it’s also a reference to the skateboard lifestyle which is defined by movement from place to place, and from one state of mind to the next.  Photos and more after the jump…

Building Castles Made of Sand featuring a new series of oil paintings on canvas and Azulejo panels - a traditional Portuguese medium of hand-painted, tin-glazed, ceramic tile work. This past weekend we stopped by HVW8 Art for the private reception for “15 Years Of Gonz and Adidas,” a photo exhibition celebrating Mark Gonzales’ 15 years with the adidas Skateboarding family. As you may know, the man they lovingly call the "Gonz" has been a good friend of the Juxtapoz, Thrasher, and High Speed family for years, and we are so happy to see this show come to fruition. In L.A.: Takashi Murakami @ Blum & Poe

This past weekend we stopped by Blum & Poe for the opening of Takashi Murakami’s latest solo exhibition “Arhat.” This is the first time Mr Murakami has shown in the United States since his travelling survey from 2007-09,  and what we saw was a fantastic series of new paintings and sculptures that remind us of the playful nature of the Japanese artist's work. Definitely a must see if you are in the Los Angeles area. Photos and more after the jump…
