Music Video: Volcano Choir "Byegone" directed by Michinori Saigo

Juxtapoz // Thursday, July 25, 2013
Volcano Choir is the "side" project of Bon Iver's Justin Vernon and Wisconsin's Collections of Colonies of Bees. In 2009, they put out a stellar and understated album called Unmap that the office of Juxtapoz liked very much. And now that Vernon is a Grammy-award winner, he is back with the Choir and creating another great track, "Byegone," for the new album Reprave out September 3 on Jagjaguwar. The video was just released, featuring a tree, light sabers that blink, and a wonderfully serene experience directed by Michinori Saigo.

Ari Marcopoulos for Jay Z's "Magna Carta Holy Grail"

Music // Wednesday, July 03, 2013
We aren't even sure what a Magna Carta Holy Grail is supposed to be, but it sounds like its competing with whatever a Yeezus is. If you have a Samsung Galaxy, maybe you are preparing for your July 4, 12:01am listening session with Jay Z's new LP of both religious and democratic implication (and for the record, we got thrones, yeezuses, Magna Cartas, and Indiana Jones over the past 18 months from Jay and West), but for the rest of us, we have to wait for the 9th of July. In the meantime, we can verify that indeed, street, skate and fashion photpgrapher Ari Marcopoulos has shot some of the imagery for Jay's album.

What's The Time?: Mike Mills, the outtakes of Hot Sauce Committee Part Two, and Beastie posters

Juxtapoz // Thursday, May 30, 2013
Filmmaker, artist, and Beautiful Loser Mike Mills has the distinguished title of being the final album cover designer for the Beastie Boys and their 2011 LP, Hot Sauce Committtee Part Two. As Mills told us in the June 2013 issue, there were many ideas and outtakes from the Hot Sauce sessions, but the final became the abstract, Vexillology-inspired color pattern you see today. Here, in Mike's own words, how this came about.

Boneface for Queens of the Stone Age "...Like Clockwork"

Music // Monday, April 22, 2013
We love when we find an artist we love that connects with a band that we love. So is the case with UK-illustrator, Boneface (featured in our September 2012 issue), as he has illustrated the new Queens of the Stone Age album cover, ...Like Clockwork. Has anyone seen the billboards in LA?

Storm Thorgerson, world famous album cover artist for Pink Floyd, RIP

Music // Friday, April 19, 2013
We are sad to hear that Storm Thorgerson, the world famous and extremely influential album cover artist for the likes of Pink Floyd, Muse, Led Zeppelin, the Mars Volta, Black Sabbath, and just a ton more, has passed away after a long battle with cancer. Obviously, Storm's work with Pink Floyd is era-defining, creating a visual identity to one of the most visual musicians of the 1960s and 1970s. After working on an issue celebrating the power of album cover artwork (you will read that one soon), we feel honoring Storm today is important for our entire industry.

Kurt Vile x ESPO: Making of "Waking On a Pretty Daze" Album Cover

Music // Friday, February 15, 2013
We previously reported that for Kurt Vile’s newest album he enlisted the expertise of fellow Philadelphian sign painter/wordsmith artist, Steve Powers aka ESPO. The album titled “Waking On a Pretty Daze” will incorporate Powers artwork on the cover and in the packaging from a mural he painted in Philly. A short documentary was created on the making of this mural. It includes some of the ideas behind the visual imagery and vocabulary Powers chose to use and incorporate on the wall.

Mark Ryden for Tyler, The Creator Album Cover

Music // Friday, February 15, 2013
An unlikely, but in our eyes, perfect match for an album cover. Mark Ryden, the multiple Juxtapoz cover artist and one of the most respected names in contemporary art, teamed up with, yes, Odd Future frontman Tyler the Creator for the cover artwork for his upcoming Wolf album. The album, out April 2nd, features a few different cover treatments, but the Ryden one is by far our favorite...

The Works of Leif Podhajsky

Music // Thursday, January 03, 2013
Leif Podhajsky recently caught our attention after we saw his album cover art for his fellow Australians, Tame Impala. As an artist and creative director, his work explores themes of connectedness, the relevance of nature and the psychedelic or altered experiences of life. By using these subjects, he attempts to inspire the viewer into a realignment with themselves and their surroundings.

Moonassi for Reedbeds' "Basement Grotto" Album Cover

Music // Saturday, November 03, 2012
We have written on the site before about how big of fans we are of the drawings of Moonassi, aka Daehyun Kim, and we ran across the new album cover the artist created for the band Reedbeds and their album Basement Grotto. Done in conjunction with the label, SicSic, we love the simple elegance of a ink of paper drawing. You have to check the details after the jump  . . .
