This morning rebel/activist/dissident/badass Chinese artist Ai Weiwei released a heavy metal single and music video on his website. The video and song, entitled Dumbass, features re-creations from his 81 days of detention. Also portraying the rock star fantasies he imagines his guards having, Ai Weiwei told the Guardian that his country was one of "crazy menace and inhuman conditions" and that the video shows an "inch-accurate" recreation of the cell, down to the wallpaper. "...stand on the frontline like a dumbass, in a country that puts out like a hooker. The fields are full of fuckers, dumbasses are everywhere... Fuck forgiveness, tolerance be damned, to hell with manners, the low-life's invincible." - Dumbass

Well, we should have known. We, or I should say I because I am speaking only for myself, used to think maybe I shoudn't tell the masses that I own a cat, but seeing that Dali, Warhol, Matisse, O'Keefe, Picasso, Kahlo, Weiwei, Klimt, Klee, Gorey and others all loved their cats, I no longer feel ashamed. Ai Weiwei is undeniably one of the most significant and heroically provocative artists in China (and in the world for that matter) right now. Juxtapoz happens to be in Singapore at the moment, and catching up on everything that is going on with the Art Stage Singapore fair, we caught wind of a collaborative exhibition with Eric So and the famed Chinese artist/activist Ai Weiwei. According to Hypebeast, So’s Aibudao sculptures have been reimagined with politically charged elements, courtesy of Mr Weiwei.

"Freedom is a strange thing." A perfect sentiment, spoken by one of the most famed, controversial, political, and influential contemporary artists in the world today, China's Ai Weiwei. Over the past few years, no artist has gained the international attention as Weiwei, both for his continually outstanding work, but for his arrest and imprisonment for phantom charges in China last year. First-time director Alison Klayman has captured the artist at his height in the documentary, Never Sorry.

When artist Ai Weiwei disappeared, supporters made online appeals for his return. When authorities handed him a £1.5m tax bill, they sent money to help pay it. And now that he faces an investigation for spreading pornography – his admirers have stripped off. Internet users began tweeting their nude photographs after Ai announced that authorities had questioned his cameraman over pictures which showed the artist and four women naked.

This intimate and personal documentary reveals the man behind the icon that is Ai Weiwei. The immensely influential Chinese artist is described as the "a god of love", "the Beijing Andy Warhol" and as "a brand for liberal thinking and individualism" and Alison Klayman investigates the person that lies underneath these grand titles.

In 2010, in the Grand Turbine Hall of the Tate Modern in London, Chinese artist became even more famous with his incredible Sunflower Seeds installation. Tonight, January 7, Weiwei will open the installation again, this time at Mary Boone Gallery in New York City.
