5pointz buffed white and set for demolition

Graffiti // Sunday, November 24, 2013
After a long struggle that lasted years between developers and the graffiti community on the future of the iconic graffiti location known as 5Pointz, the battle ended last week. And not in the favor of writers.  In the early morning the enormous building had been white washed even though demolition was not immediate and the owners reasoning was “To watch the pieces go down piece by piece by piece would be torturous.” So that’s that. An end of an era. If anything, hopefully there will be a backlash of illegal work hitting the streets, which is what’s happened in the past when legal spots are destroyed and graffiti writers are pushed out of their comfort zone.

Occupying a city block and 5 stories high, 5Pointz is destination for street artists around the world visiting New York City.  The building’s owner, Jerry Wolkoff says the time has come to redevelop the site and build high-rise residential towers with up to 1,300 rental units.  The building would also include a diverse mix of shops and restaurants, a supermarket, as well as studios available to artists.  The property is quite valuable and comes as know surprise with all the development in New York.
