Barbara Hepworth Statue Stolen by Metal Thieves

Street Art // Friday, 23 Dec 2011

As the prices of copper, lead, and bronze increase, public metal sculptures become victims of theft for quick money.  In London, a metal sculpture created by artist Barbara Hepworth was stolen from where it had stood for over 40 years.  Valued at an estimated $784,450, if melted down for scrap it could yield near $1,100.  Incidents around UK have been increasing and scrap metal thieves are suspected to be behind numerous public sculpture thefts.  Last January here in the U.S., five bronze sculptures were stolen outside the Phillip Ratner Museum of Art in Bethesda, Maryland.
