The Large Scale of Jeff Wall

Often drawing inspiration from impressionist paintings and notable literature for the compositions of his photographs, artist Jeff Wall also mimics the scale of his inspirations through the literal size of his photographs. After printing each image at least six feet wide on transparency, Wall turns each photograph into a large scale lightbox. By giving each detailed, and sometimes busy, photograph it’s own light source, he can be sure that every part of the image is seen equally by the viewer. Wall often explores the actions of slight gestures, what they mean, and how they come across to an audience. He also experiments with point of view and how he can manipulate it through camera function.
