Rinko Kawauchi’s “Ametsuchi”Photography // Friday, 04 Apr 2014
In 2013, Aperture published Rinko Kawauchi’s “Ametsuchi” photobook. The series of images depicted Kawauchi’s visual exploration through the southern Japan region of Aso, it’s picturesque landscape, and the elements that the landscape contained, both above and below. While photographing the region, she came across the Japanese traditional style of controlled-burn farming (yakihata), which she photographed extensively in the book, creating dream-like images of flames and smoke engulfing the vast landscape.
