In 1969, Eugene Richards travelled to the Mississippi Delta of Arkansas to be a volunteer for VISTA (Volunteers in Service to America), a branch of AmeriCorps that was designed specifically to help fight poverty throughout America. Richards ended up staying in Arkansas until 1972, photographing and creating close relationships with his subjects during his stay. In 1986 and again in 2010, Richards revisited the areas of Arkansas that he had once known so well and re-photographed the area, showing the contrast from the community he knew when he first arrived in 1969. This month, a book containing images from all his time photographing in Arkansas will be released titled “Red Ball of Sun Slipping Down”.
