Len Lye was a New Zealand Born artist renowned for his work and experimentation in film. As a modernist exploring the medium he broke new ground in drawing directly onto the film and modified documentary footage with sharp colors, distinct marks and many overlaying effects that may appear banal compared to the easy drastic modifications achieved in seconds on our computers. During this time to alter film in such a dramatic way was groundbreaking and he has had a tremendous influence upon experimental film for decades, inspiring the likes of Stan Brakhage and many others.
