Jim Goldberg is an American documentary photographer working in a unique style. He records conversations with his subjects, and then brings his photographic prints back and asks them write an edited portion of that conversation. Goldberg has applied this technique to several books, the two most prominent being ‘Rich and Poor’ which juxtaposes an affluent reality with those in poverty, as well as ‘Raised by Wolves’ which documents a group of young runaway drug addicts. These photographs are one of a kind and are very psychologically poignant. We get a glimpse beneath a standard portrait, which force the viewer to ambiguously come to a conclusion. Goldberg avoids this by including this first hand information, the personal hand writing adds further depth, it can reveal the type of person the are in an abstract way.
