Miranda July is excellent at everything. She's a filmmaker, actress, artist, writer, etc. and her new app, Somebody, just debuted at the Venice Film Festival along with an awkwardly sweet short film about it. Here's how the app works: "When you send your friend a message through Somebody, it goes—not to your friend—but to the Somebody user nearest your friend. This person (likely a stranger) delivers the message verbally, acting as your stand-in. It needs a critical mass of users to work, so invite your friends and make your university / workplace / party a Somebody “hotspot”!" Several art museums have official hotspots for Somebody, but you can also try to start your own!
As we wrote in her 2012 feature in Juxtapoz, everything Miranda July touches turns to gold, and this app is just the social experiment we need right now. Watch the movie and make it happen.
