As we did last summer, Juxtapoz is teaming up with the Ace Hotel Palm Springs for a little summer hangout session in the desert. The very hot, pool-oriented, modern architecture desert setting, if you will. Last year Sage Vaughn and Father John Misty headlined the weekend, and this year, Jux is lucky to participate with School Night and Ace Hotel's "Summer School" art and education program, featuring artist-taught workshops with Kozyndan, Michelle Valigura, Marcelo Gomes, Kayla Mattes, and a special print pop-up shop hosted by Poster Child Prints.

Our annual weekend of artist workshops, plus DJs and bands curated by School Night Los Angeles (KCRW's Chris Douridas and MFG's Matt Goldman) is finally coming back again for three sunny summer days.

It's a School Night presents music poolside and in the Amigo Room by Tropical Popsicle, Body Parts, Cosmic Kids, Goddollars, Baby Alpaca, Golden Touch and Guns In The Sun DJs Matt Pennington, Clay Anthony, Peter Nussbaum and Latane Hughes. This weekend is always alive with creative energy, and you get to take home a bunch of art you made and show your friends or your Moms. All workshops are everybody-level and included with your room or with a day pass to the Swim Club ($20 at the front desk, includes gym, pool and workshops all day).
Michelle Valigura is a sculptor, with a primary focus on ceramics and background designing for stop motion animation (including Elf, and the Simpsons). She's licensed characters she created to Disneyland, Kidrobot, Paradise Toys and other art/toy brands and formed her own design company, Switcheroo, with Amanda Visell. She has exhibited her work, lectured and taught workshops at galleries, museums and universities worldwide.
Born in Brazil, Marcelo lives and works in New York. He's published work in T Magazine, French Glamour, New York Magazine, Harper’s Bazaar, Dazed and Confused, Double, Index, The Journal, The Last Magazine, Teen Vogue, The Wire, Sup’ Magazine and published two books, 'Love and Before, Green and After' and 'Taciturn Heart.' He was part of the group show 'Younger than I'll Be' at BAM titled with Jack Pierson, Roberto Longo, Larry Clark and Nan Goldin. His solo show 'Exploding, Still' opened in 2010 at Family in Los Angeles.
Kayla Mattes is a textile-based artist and designer who works with machine knits, printed fabrics, digital collage, weavings and material experimentation. She launched her own jewelry line last year and her work has been featured in Rhizome, WAD Magazine, I WANT YOU Magazine and IT Fashion. She's collaborated with artists and organizations like Art is Shit Editions, Urban Outfitters, Nicole Killian, Marina Fini and The Patternbase. She currently lives and works in Portland, Oregon.
kozyndan are husband-and-wife artists who work collaboratively to create highly detailed paintings and drawings for illustration and fine art. They're obsessed with the ocean and being underwater and hope to someday come to rest at the bottom of the sea.
