In her series 1 2 3 2 1, Yao Yuan intertwines images taken during and after friend Nagakura Nami's pregnancy and the birth of her child from 2017 to 2019. The book parallels Yuan's personal experiences and travels between Japan and China.

Within the book, Yuan examines ancient allegories, contemplating modern existence through a queer, intimate perspective. This work showcases a diverse array of cityscapes, natural scenes, vibrant colors, and ordinary moments, combining raw emotions with everyday transience. It delves into various themes such as time, memories, gender, borders, identity, spirituality, nature, healing, care, reality, magic, and mystery, all conveyed through visual poetry and metaphorical imagery.
