For a very short and intense period of time in the early 1970s, South African photographer David Goldblatt (1920-2018), focused on taking pictures of people's individual body languages "as affirmations or embodiments of their selves." In the resulting series, which is one of our favorites by the artist, sees hands resting on laps, crossed legs, the curved backs of sleepers on a lawn at midday, their fingers and feet relaxed, pausing from their usual occupations.

David Goldblatt's Particulars was re-published in 2014 and is available via Steidl.
