Today in our A Portfolio series, we take a look at the works of Timothy Lai Hui Ming, who recently showed a new body of work at Jack Barrett in NYC in late 2022. Those works, titled Don’t Let the Sun Go Down on Me, Pa, found Lai, whose mother is Mexican American and father is Chinese from Malaysia, exploring "the dynamics of kinship concerning his own personal history." 

Timothy Lai (b. 1987, Kota Bharu, Kelantan, Malaysia) lives and works in Providence, Rhode Island. He received his BA in Communication from the University of Texas at San Antonio in 2009, and his MFA in painting from the Rhode Island School of Design in 2017. His work has been featured in solo and group presentations with Jack Barrett, Chart, Fabian Lang, Essex Flowers, Bass & Reiner Gallery, Good Naked Gallery, and Field Projects. In 2022, Lai had his first institutional solo ehxhibition at Longlati Foundation in Shangahi, and was awarded the 2022 Rhode Island State Council of the Arts Fellowship in Painting.
