We have been looking forward to a new body of work from Kris Lewis, and we are excited this morning to show you new paintings from his upcoming exhibition at David B. Smith Gallery in Denver, opening Friday, November 9. Lewis' new work again shows a rare talent in both surreal and photoreal portrait art, with each portrait shown here an oil on canvas or panel work.
From the gallery:
This series features many of the the evocative landscape backdrops of earlier works—a frozen mountainscape, a strange ocean, a pillowing snowdrift—while simultaneously, we see Lewis removing elements of the scenery or distilling it to a single abstract element. As Lewis explores portraiture in the absence of this type of signifier, the meaning relies more on gesture and expression, and these works prompt questioning of the role of the portrait as an object itself.
