Collage Art by John Stezaker

April 24, 2012

London-based artist John Stezaker catalogues images from a variety of books, magazines, and postcards, using these printed photographic images as appropriating ready-made content in a new context, allowing its original and new context as a means to create associations and new meanings. Juxtaposing male and female facial fragments critiquing gender and identity and various publicly shot film stars creating hybrid icons commenting on the familiar and the uncanny, Stezaker evokes moments of Hollywood's golden era as well as some alignments with Surrealism and ideas of the grotesque.
