Shanghai's "One City, Nine Towns" plan was a government project to build 10 satellite cities, each with it's architecture copied from a different European country. It has now become a trend, a 'national pastime' to build replica western cities. Bianca Bosker has dedicated a recent book to researching the Architectural Mimicry in detail. The copycat communities are often brick-to-brick copies of historical European buildings. While some of these cities are occupied, many, such as the replica Paris, are ghost towns.
