Ben Frost is at war with advertising and consumerist culture. His often controversial take on the pre-packaged world that we live in, fuses popular culture with the experience of living in our contemporary mediasaturated environment. His new exhibition ‘Know Your Product’ makes us look twice at the ‘objects of our desire’ by re-contextualizing well known items that we see in every day life into confronting and sometimes shocking visual re-interpretations. Well known most recently for his paintings onto McDonald’s fry boxes and pharmaceutical packaging, Frost further explores this style with works on such items as board games, historical stamps, children’s bed sheets and found objects from his travels. Frost says, ”We’re surrounded every day by advertising and the packaging that cleverly tries to sell us a multitude of ridiculous and worthless products” Frost says. “ I want to use these objects as a means of not only re-interpreting them in new ways, but to somehow take the power back from the corporations that feed us this endless torrent of hyper-color filth.”
Ben Frost is originally from Australia, where he has made a name for himself with his pop and street-art style. He has been living in Canada for the last 2 years and has been creating thought-provoking sell-out shows throughout North America and Europe.
