25 Years Ago Today, Jean-Michel Basquiat Died

August 12, 2013

On August 12, 1988, one of the most influential and famed artists to emerge from late 20th Century American art, especially downtown NYC art, combining Neo-expressionist, graffiti, music, and poetry,  died from a heroin overdose at the age of 27. Jean-Michel Basquiat, in his life and in his death, was both a symbol of the power of art and creativity, but also a symbol of the power of the art market. He continues to this day to be a favorite amongst our readers, and art collectors around the world. (via)
