new drawing:

new drawing:

new drawing:

My name is Eric Thomas Bostrom, I am 29 and live in Santa Rosa, California. I make drawings with ballpoint, sharpie and gesso on tinted paper. The last real show I had was a group show curated by Audrey Kawasaki @ Thinkspace LA in November '08. I'm hungry! I'd love to be a part of your next group show.

I have several sites:
Finished drawings + sketches/scraps:
http://diversionmary.com

My portfolio site:
http://ericthomasbostrom.com

Drawings made in collaboration:
http://cheeseissliced.com

Here are some examples of my drawings:

Grafuck3, 8x10", ballpoint mixed media on paper

You act like a rodent, 11x14", ballpoint mixed media on paper

Division, 11x14", ballpoint mixed media on paper

Ironic Mustache, 11x14", ballpoint mixed media on paper

Stranger Danger triptych roughly 4x3', ballpoint mixed media on paper:
Left:

Center:

Right:

Left and right overlay stereoscope double helix, forms a profile:

Terror Dog, 8x10", ballpoint mixed media on paper

My statement:
I work primarily in ballpoint using col-erase light blue and red underneath to give texture to the lines. The addition of gesso makes for wild hues and the occasional application of plain rubbing alcohol creates an array of purples.

My work process involves sitting in front of a blank sheet and allowing myself to relax restrictions so that I can 'just draw' without getting bogged down inventing concept or focusing on a preconceived image. The results are fluid, dreamlike psycho-sexual 'surrealist' images. These images are often fueled by my fascinations with sex, biology and anatomy.

Thank you for your interest!

its almost like a Dali styled version of Francis bacon paintings, anyways their pretty intresting from my point of view I'd say the Ironic Mustache is one of the stronger pieces from this set.
theirs a real look of despair and gluttony on the characters face and some pretty nice details on the fish's body

Hi I just wanted to let you know that I have really enjoyed looking at these drawings. To me they almost seem like tattoos, especially on the fleshy coloured paper. I love Stranger Danger.

These are super nice. Really beautiful. I love that you can see butt cracks, vaginas and animals all in the same drawing. Stranger Danger is ridiculous.

It's hard to believe this could be done with ballpoint and sharpie. Great stuff.

I do a couple of drawings with ballpoint, but nothing compared to this art!
Brilliant stuff!

wow these are amazing. I love the way you manipulate/combine different kinds of forms. Your use of negative space  is inspiring as well.

Thanks! I don't ever know how people will read these. They have meaning and intent, but it's impossible to force someone to feel something.

Great stuff!

Thanks so much! I appreciate the mention!

Hi I just wanted to let you know that I have really enjoyed looking at these drawings. To me they almost seem like tattoos, especially on the fleshy coloured paper. I love Stranger Danger.

Yes, I have been interested in tattoos and tattoo art for a long time. I used to make home-made tattoo machines and tattoo people when I was a teenager. Now I am learning how to tattoo for real!

The colored paper allows me to forget about white space and involve everything, so that negative space isn't really negative. Further, the white gesso is reflective under gallery lighting so it 'pops' off the page. It's the same idea as priming a canvas with acrylic tinted gesso: an under-under-painting. Smiley

These are super nice. Really beautiful. I love that you can see butt cracks, vaginas and animals all in the same drawing. Stranger Danger is ridiculous.

It used to worry me that I was too blatant, but I can't stop so I run with it.

It's hard to believe this could be done with ballpoint and sharpie. Great stuff.

Ballpoint is amazing but entirely ephemeral. Archival ballpoint is hard to come by and doesn't draw quite right, so I accept that what I am doing right now won't last for more than a few years even under uv glass with sealed gallery framing.

wow these are amazing. I love the way you manipulate/combine different kinds of forms. Your use of negative space  is inspiring as well.

Thanks! It's hard for some people to see the not-drawing. For Stranger Danger left/right, I made a different transparent piece for a gallery, with suspended layers that really showed the interlocking segments in action. http://is.gd/20Zja

Thanks to everyone, I very much appreciate your time and consideration!
