Mark Powell: Self-Addressed

Illustration // Friday, 09 Mar 2012

mark-powell-self-addressed-an-unsealed-2 London artist Mark Powell cleverly re-purposes old, used, and often tattered ephemera. Using cancelled envelopes as his canvases, he produces striking, life-like, and inked drawings. His sketches are made using only a Bic Biro pen, often incorporating the original stamps, logos, and addresses. By recycling the envelopes, however, he is in some way preserving a moment of history as well as creating a new visual narrative to the sender's myth. The Leeds native suggests that his portraiture indeed focuses on older characters who tell their own stories … with the wear and wrinkles of both paper and face.
