Daniel Wong's series of paintings and painted canvas shoes entitled "Cephalo-Pod" captures the energy and dynamism of these underwater creatures with graphic, geometric precision. Tied together with a surprising palette of oranges and blues, the paintings and sneakers have a pop art sensibility, pushing the oft-repeated symbol of the squid or octopus in a surprising new aesthetic direction. "What draws me to cephalopods is the absurdity of their form," explains Wong, whose obsession with the animals began way back in first grade. "It's sort of a scientific approach," Wong says of his stylistic choices, "almost from a clinical, taxonomic perspective." This makes sense, given that Wong is currently studying both biology and studio art at Stanford University. Who wouldn't want to get their hands on these paintings or a pair of shoes?
