Iwase Yoshiyuki's Japanese Mermaids

Erotica // Monday, 05 May 2014
1

For some two thousand years Japanese women living in costal villages hunted the ocean for oysters, abalone and pearl producing sea snails. In the mid 20th century, Iwase Yoshiyuki returned to the small village he grew up in and photographed these women performing their daily activities. The photos which come from Yoshiyuki's collection are considered to be the only comprehensive documentation of this near extinct tradition.
