Tuomas Markunpoika Creates Beautiful Vases Using Hundreds of Pencils

Finnish designer Tuomas Markunpoika has created a series of vases carved from hundreds of pencils glued together. Available exclusively through London's Gallery FUMI, they were recently launched at the Design Miami/Basel. The vases are coated lacquer and beeswax and epoxy resin to make them watertight.

"I want to design objects that endure time, objects that you fall in love with and will not throw away,” Markunpoika said. "I don't believe I can achieve the same visual effect with other materials… The problem of sustainability in a design context is that on many levels it still promises infinite consumption of goods with impunity... It also makes us feel virtuous about throwing things away… I don't believe I can achieve the same visual effect with other materials."
