We are celebrating our October 2013; Tom Waits issue in the office this month and begin with this short rotoscoped movie staring Tom from 1979. Produced and directed by John Lam of Lyon Lam, it was among the first music videos created specifically for the up and coming MTV market. Inspired by his performance at the Roxy in 1977, the short was unfortunately never released commercially and didn't see the light of day until the advent of YouTube. The combination of rotoscoping and pencil test used in the short was innovative at the time and helped Lamb win an Academy Award for Scientific and Technical Achievement. The production team also consisted of future animators for the Simpsons, Monster’s Inc. and Disney! The film also one first place at the first Hollywood Erotic and Video Festival in 1980.
