In most places the manhole cover is tasked with preventing us from falling into the sewer. In Japan, they are also works of art. Beginning in the 1980's, the ornate and decorative covers began popping up across the country. While the general style and color of the covers remain the same, the imagery and symbols will change depending on which region of Japan you're in. City councils will submit ideas to in-house designers who will then create design to their specifications. (via it's nice that)
