The Art of Katya Bonnenfant aka The Old Boys’ Club

Juxtapoz // Tuesday, 18 Jan 2011

It takes a lot to be known to the world as Katya Bonnenfant, be a museum-level artist, and then switch up your moniker to The Old Boys’ Club. Well, it was just done, and for her show at Haines Gallery in San Francisco, Katya is now an Old Boy.

At Haines, the Old Boys' Club showcases gouache drawings and sculptures from the recent project La Destitution de la Jeune Fille.

In their statement, The Old Boys’ Club writes: “Premiers Matériaux... is a controversial essay, insolent and impressive…yet the book doesn’t provide any possible solutions in order to change society. La Destitution de la Jeune Fille tries to humbly define some humorous territory where the Young Lady can be dethroned.”

From the images we have seen, the exhibition at Haines is incredibly diverse. There are these very simple, eye-catching gouache on paper drawings coinciding with more installation based, small animations enclosed in vintage calculators and clocks that deals with recycling old technologies. The French-born artist seems to have a command of multiple genres, all on display here.

The Old Boys' Club has a show under the name Katya Bonnenfant at the Yerba Buena Center for the Arts, and from the looks of it, that exhibiton is still up. It shares the name, La Destitution de la Jeune Fille.

As noted on ArtDaily, "While the YBCA exhibition featured a densely populated wallpaper installation incorporating video projection and sculptural elements, the collective’s works at Haines Gallery more formally present these figures as individual portraits and scene studies."

We provide captions to help clear up what she is doing here.
