Suspended Birdcages in Sydney, AustraliaJuxtapoz // Tuesday, 30 Oct 2012
What was once a temporary installation in Sydney's Angel Place from 2009, artist Michael Thomas Hill created Forgotten Songs, an installation of 110 empty birdcages suspended above the ground that also contained an audio element that gave the sound of 50 or so birds that used to exist in the area prior to industrialization.
Because of the popularity of the installation, the request was made to make it a permanent public art piece. According to MyModernMet, "public outcry led to 180 new rustproof cages to be re-installed with 10 speakers that play the sweet songs of 50 bird species."
