Stolenspace in association with Penguin Books bring "Never Judge...?" to LondonJuxtapoz // Friday, 26 Nov 2010
Had we not followed the old saying "Never judge a book by the cover," we would never had read Jonathan Franzen's fantastic new book, Freedom. There is a reason why the saying exists. Stolenspace Gallery has teamed up with Penguin Books for Never Judge . . . ?, a group exhibition featuring modern takes by artists of classic books in the Penguin archives.
Each artist in Never Judge . . . ? was asked to paint, print, etch, sculpt, photograph to create a book cover for a novel of their choice, a book that has inspired them, a book that has had a profound impact on them or a book that they remember fondly as a child, and all that Stolenspace asked was that they create their original artwork to the traditional format and size of a Penguin book 198mm (h) x 129mm (w).
The image above is Graham Dolphin 'First and Last 5 Pages', a drawing on paperback book (The text drawn into the cover is from the first and last five pages of The Catcher In The Rye. The first 5 pages run down the cover, the last 5 pages run up until they meet.)
The idea for the show already is very interesting, as so many important novels have iconic covers in various editions and countries, and to have a whole new re-imagination should make for a solid group show.

Anthony Lister's 'Steppenwolf':
