Saul Leiter Retrospective @ Deichtorhallen, HamburgJuxtapoz // Tuesday, 10 Apr 2012
Saul Leiter is an artist that has been working in a variety of mediums for decades. Working as much in painting as he does in photography, Leiter's interests were in accordance with many of the trends during his time. Arriving to New York at the age of 23 in 1946, his passion was painting but he also was prolific in his photography. Inspirations from abstract expressionism and color field painting are as apparent in his works captured on film as they were in his works rendered by a brush. Here we provide a glimpse into some of his photos that we saw in a recent article from Daily Serving. The cropping of the frame and the abstract fields of color provided by the New York streets are color paintings in themselves, as the urban environment offers up moments of flattened geometric compositions. His work is up at Deichtorhallen, Hamburg until April 15th.
