"Transmissions: New Remote Earth Views" by Dan HoldsworthJuxtapoz // Monday, 16 Apr 2012
Taking a scientific approach to document and map out the geological features of many prominent natural features of the West of North America, Dan Holdsworth has created a series of large-scale prints now on view at Brancolini Gimaldi. Well known locations such as Yosemite Valley, the Grand Canyon, Mt. St. Helens, Mt. Shasta, Salt Lake City, and others are depicted as geological surveys typically used to observer topographical and climate changes. The images themselves are are laser scans of the earth rendered using data from the United States Geological Survey. These prints on the surface are breathtaking images of these sweeping landscapes, but also begin to point towards larger underlying issues of ideological and political issues of land use and issues of how we utilize our knowledge of the land and the natural environment.
