Preview: Yosuke Ueno "The Specific Illusion" @ Thinkspace, Culver CityJuxtapoz // Thursday, 22 Mar 2012
On Saturday, March 31, Thinkspace Gallery in Culver City, California will open, The Specific Illusion, an exhibition of new works by Japanese artist, Yosuke Ueno. With this being Yosuke's third solo show with Thinkspace, the works finds the artist reflecting upon and strongly influenced by the changes in Japan since the Great Earthquake and Tsunami of March 11th, 2011.
On March 11th, 2011, the Great Earthquake and Tsunami attacked eastern Japan and the accident in the nuclear reactor in Fukushima soon followed the catastrophes. The date 3/11 had become an unforgettable date for all the people that live in Japan and Japan has suffered a great trauma. Our daily lives have totally changed since that day. I can almost not believe that I am living the same world where we had lived before 3/11. Many people in Japan distinguish their lives as before 311 and “after 311.” I remember well being faced with blank canvases, trembling in great fear at those days. But somehow that quake has brought a specific shape to my art, one that has had some obscure illusions. The piece, I am forest, came from me started to trek around the mountains and I feel a lot of admiration for nature in my country. Every weekend I start to walk on mountains at the crack of dawn. Those forests take me in, and I become a part of the forests. —Yosuke Ueno
