On September 7, 2012, Juxtapoz will be a co-sponsor of a new exhibition opening in Miami at 101/Exhibit, Urban Narrative, featuring new works by former Juxtapoz featured artist Claudio Ethos and Dominican-born artist, Ruben Ubiera.

The acclaimed Sao Paulo-based street surrealist, Claudio Ethos and Miami New Times vote for Best Street Artist of 2012, Ruben Ubiera, will present a dual exhibition, entitled “Urban Narrative“ at 101/Exhibit preceeding Wynwood’s 2nd Saturday’s Art Walk on Friday September 7th.
101/Exhibit’s 5,000 square foot gallery space will house over 20 stunning, pop-surrealistic works by Ethos and Ubiera. The stylistic combinations make for a compelling look into Pop-Surrealism also known as Lowbrow. Appropriately Robert Williams, the founder of Juxtapoz Magazine, coined the term Lowbrow and the magazine continues to support the most influential artists in the urban alternative and underground contemporary art scenes.
The Michael Marguilies Artist Agency, Juxtapoz Magazine with the support of Mixed Media Collective invite art enthusiasts to enjoy complimentary signature cocktails by The Black Grouse, Cutty Sark, Brugal Rum and Perrier® Sparkling Natural Mineral Water compliments of Société Perrier. About Claudio Ethos
“Ethos was born in São Paulo in 1982 and currently lives in the city of Birigüi, which is located in the interior of the São Paulo state. He began putting in work around the age of 15 with spray paint as well as ballpoint pen, which to this day serve as his primary tools. Highly influenced by many of the usual suspects from the Brazilian scene, Os Gemeos, Vitche, Onesto, and Herbert Baglione, Ethos’ style has taken its own highly unique state and individual genesis. Many in São Paolo today still prefer the stencil technique, or are part of large pixação crews with their own signatures, but Ethos has absolutely carved out his own niche amongst the muralists. His large-scale outdoor murals are less impulsive in origin than many of his contemporary's work, but no less stunning. His flawless conversions of his ballpoint pen drawings, usually from 8.5'' x 11'' or smaller make absolutely remarkable transitions from paper to concrete, almost as if an image has been transferred from transparency to projector. While using a thread technique, amongst others, the amount of detail with his outdoor portraiture has captured the attention of countless art enthusiasts, his peers, and gallerists around the world. His penchant for replicating to scale the fine details of his ink and pencil drawings onto large walls has become his lasting signature. The content this work, both indoors and outdoors, is inevitably related to the struggle of day-to-day existence that Paulistas experience. Population density and the constant strain of urban anxiety become the subjects for many of Ethos' narratives. Ethos' characters have undeniably become some of the most recognized all throughout Brazil with his ephemeral work at times straddling the line of the figurative and abstract. His elongated, flexible, and strained figures have an almost liquid quality to them; one foot firmly in the school of the surrealists. He also displays a solid grasp of textiles in the use of patterns. Huge black balls serve as eyes for the exhausted and maligned residents of the concrete jungle. These characters are a mixture of dreams and fragments of everyday life within the city.”

About Ruben Ubiera
Ruben Gerardo Ubiera Gonzalez (born October 19, 1975 in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic) is a Dominican neo-figurative artist.
Ruben paints and draws in a style considered by many as Pop-surrealism, but he prefers to call it urban-pop, since he has lived most of his life in the urban, populated areas and most of his inspiration is derived from the interactivity between man and his urban environment. At the age of 15, his family moved to the Bronx, NY, where he was heavily influenced by the graffiti art that surrounded him, something he wouldn't realize until much later in his life.
He captures an essential part of his past, his present and his subjects through the use of the line and form. His work includes still life and situational portraiture however; Ruben tends to primarily focus on city landscapes. His paintings are, on first examination, noted for being charged with 'skateboard- isms', paint drips and the constant presence of graffiti in some shape or form. But, after closer inspection, one notices the detail, sarcastic contrast, the social commentary and human struggle that's felt by the technique and subject matter.
