Photos: The ChouChou Preview

Gary Baseman sent us a few sketches and previews of paintings from his upcoming solo show, Hide and Seek in the Forest of ChouChou, which opens this weekend at Billy Shire Fine Arts in Los Angeles. This show is part two of a solo he had up in San Francisco in March 2007 titled I Melt In Your Presence. This weekend's show is the continuing story of the ChouChous, the mythical creatures invented by Gary that "take your negative energy and hate, and absorb it and excrete it out as creamy gooey love out of their belly buttons." Sounds sweet, but there's lots of "fucked up allegory" to be read into this both playful and disturbing narrative series. The exhibit opens this Saturday, July 14th and runs through August 11th.
