Patrick Martinez "Buy Now Cry Later" @ Public Functionary, MinneapolisJuxtapoz // Tuesday, 17 Dec 2013
This past November, former Juxtapoz feature Patrick Martinez opened a solo exhibit of all new works at a new contemporary exhibition space, Public Functionary in Minneapolis. The exhibit, titled, "Buy Now Cry Later," includes 17 original neon works and paintings. Exhibit subject matter follows Martinez's ongoing exploration of his home city and societal, "American" issues while interweaving personal anecdotes, several of the pieces are autobiographical. The show is on its final days, closing on December 20.
This is Martinez's first showing in the Midwest. Public Functionary will host severalFriday night events throughout the run of the show including performances, panels and talks with local partners such as Greenroom Magazine and Rhymesayers. Also in conjunction with the exhibit, Patrick Martinez and Public Functionary produced several limited edition digital reproductions available for sale through the gallery. They include a custom packaged print suite of 3 mini-prints and a digital print/silkscreen overlay print of Martinez's sculptural piece featuring Tupac on a cake: "happy birthday makaveli." Prints as well as original works featured in the exhibit are available for purchase through Public Functionary.
