Pardee's Pick: The Art of Jeff McMillanJuxtapoz // Thursday, 04 Oct 2012
One of the best things about collaborating and becoming friends with other artists that I love is what kind of jewels I can wrench out of them by trading art for art.
A couple of years ago, Jeff McMillan and I made a simple trade after collaborating on a painting that I am still in disbelief that it happened.
One one of my favorite movies, as well as movie POSTERS from the late 80's is "THE GATE". The film is about 2 kids who open a portal to Hell in their back yard after playing a black metal album backwards. Coincidentally, Jeff had just painted a commissioned piece for the apparel company RVCA featuring the RVCA logo parodying "THE GATE". I loved it! When Jeff and I were trading pieces, I (almost jokingly) asked if could have the GATE piece and he casually said "sure". After making sure that he understood what I said, he sent me the piece in exchange for one of mine and to this day it hangs right outside my bedroom and I pass it and stare at it every time I go to the bathroom in the middle of the night. It's perfect.
Jeff's technique is incredible and he somehow mixes photo-realism and stylized fantasy imagery without compromising or conflicting either of them. And aside from working for clients like Mike Tyson, RVCA, Pac Sun, Linkin Park and Erykuh Badu, Jeff continues to live and work with his wife and two disobedient Siamese cats in Long Beach, CA.
And a side note... Jeff and his wife had a YETI at their wedding. A real yeti. With lederhosen.
Jeff McMillan was born in October of 1977 in San Jose, CA. He attended the Academy of Art in San Francisco
and graduated from Art Center College of Design in Pasadena in 2004. He now lives and works in Long Beach, CA
with his wonderful wife Liv, daughter Elsa and two disobedient Siamese cats.
