Alex Roulette's paintings are both realistic yet subtly surreal. A strangely dreamlike landscape is occupied by young boys, as if recalling some idealized, American summer vacation. Yet the houses seem over simplified and out of place, as if reduced in detail and pasted on to the rolling meadows that span the scene, recalling the hazy state of dreams where only certain details truly pop and fall into place while others swirl away in into your unconscious. The homes range from mid-century modern architecture to average American cottages, furthering the odd appearance of the homes within the ideal landscapes. The result is pleasant yet slightly chilling collection of scenes where what is happening is not quite clear, but you coast along for the ride.
