Opening: Marcos LaFarga @ Zerofriends, OaklandJuxtapoz // Thursday, 04 Oct 2012
I didn't take very many art classes in community college. In fact, I think I only took one, unless I blocked them out of my memory. And one of our first assignments in that class, before even doing the usual "value scales" or blind contour drawings, was to fully recreate a traditional Renaissance painting with the additional task of "adding a self portrait" into it, which would then be publicly critiqued by everyone else in the class who also lacked the same knowledge on the subject as I did because it was an INTRODUCTORY class! Seriously. I lasted about 10 days in that class before deciding to skip that one and instead sit in on a computer class for no credit every day. That decision was awesome.
However, not all was lost on that class, as that was where I met artist Marcos LaFarga, who I could tell shared my confusion. I think Marcos nobly lasted longer in that class and many others, but even if he didn't, he has managed to excel in a ton of different fields of professional art. From gallery shows to commercial work, graffiti and typography to logo design, Marcos keeps adding a breath of fresh air to the realm of type-pop-art. Should that be called "Type-opraphy"? Who cares, Marcos is rad.
His new solo art show, called "Home Cooking" caters toward those who appreciate typography geeks, designers, painters, and anyone with a sharp subtle sense of humor opens tonight, Oct 4 at the Zerofriends Oakland gallery where Marcos & Zerofriends will be giving away a free, signed giclee print from the show to the first 45 people to show up! Tonight, 6-9Pm, Zerofriends Gallery. 489 25th St, Oakland, CA.
And here is Juxtapoz writer Jeben Berg chiming in with a little more info about Mr. Lafarga.
"With every letter crafted there is a story being told, and with only 26 of them to augment it takes a deft hand and a designer mind to make them distinct. Born in 1978 in Antioch, California, Marcos LaFarga has been developing his true west design aesthetic right in the epicenter of California creativity. His pedigree is one that runs from the wall and the freight, to a BFA in 2006 from California College of the Arts. It is this diverse background that provides him with the depth to move and merge between otherwise separate visual languages. Marcos focuses his artistry on the intersection of three fundamentals of visual expression, graphic design, typography, and photo realistic renderings, all three which he seamlessly melds to create a united reflection of our contemporary life. With an abundant sense of color value and contrast, a sublime sense of humor, and a sensitivity for the balance our eyes naturally seek; Marcos is creating honest work that effortlessly represents contemporary design and composition. Marcos is always actively seeking that next unique challenge.
