New Work from The Mac

Juxtapoz // Friday, 20 Feb 2009

El Mac shot us over some photos of his newest piece. We’ll allow him to explain for himself:

“This is a new painting I've just finished called Song of Songs. I spent a few weeks working on this and I'm pretty happy with how it came out. The title refers to the Thai text in the halo, which is an excerpt from the Song of Solomon in the Old Testament:

Who is this that grows like the dawn,
As beautiful as the full moon,
As pure as the sun,
As awesome as an army with banners?

Needless to say, Mac’s work continues to astound us with its combination of bold graffiti style and classic art technique.

"This painting is called The Lookout," Mac explains.  "It's based on some photos I took at an apartment complex in a shady part of Phoenix, though it could pass for hundreds of other similarly depressing stuccoed apartments across the country. The railing is reminiscent of prison bars. I tried to take a grim scene and make it beautiful."
