Maki Ohkojima, a Japanese based painter, has developed in an intricate style she calls “the mural beyond the frame.” When we come upon a beautiful landscape, what do we do? Take out our phone to capture the moment, only to realize that there is no way to honestly capture the scene in its entirety. But Ohkojima doesn’t stop at the edge, extending beyond the scene onto the wall, she creates glorious sprawling murals.

“When drawing a picture, I always think that the picture I am drawing in that moment is merely one part of a larger world and narrative,” says Ohkojima. “By drawing like this, the land and the picture are becoming further connected and one piece of scenery, which I could not see before.”
