Meet Christopher Anderson, Magnum Photographer who Published Book on iPad

Juxtapoz // Tuesday, 05 Apr 2011
Magnum Photos member, Christopher Anderson, created a body of work titled Capitolio, a documentary series of his time in the heart of contemporary Caracas, Venezuela. Instead of just publishing the documentary photo series in traditional book form, Anderson is bucking a trend: the Magnum photographer has also released it on the iPad and iPhone.

Anderson tells the British Journal of Photography about publishing Capitolio on an iPad, "The ultimate and ideal form of the work for me is a printed book. But there are certain constraints of the printed form: it is expensive (both to produce and buy) putting it out of reach for all but a select group with the means to shell out that kind of money, and there are only a finite number of books available. It occurred to me that here was the potential to reach an infinite audience."

There is also another interesting part of the project: he can create his own "director's cut," have a video interview at the end of the experience, and create the intended cinematic experience with the iPad's unique swiping page turn. Anderson goes on to say, "This design of the print book was itself an experiment in trying to rip a cinematic experience from the silver screen and stuffing it onto the printed page. This aspect is actually accentuated in the swipeable form."
