Mass Gymnastics and Human Paintings in North Korea

Juxtapoz // Monday, 24 Oct 2011

We have seen some videos and heard about the Mass Games in North Korea and the incredible synchronized art routines that occur with thousands of people in the grandstands, but this massive wave of human billboard art is one of the more impressive things we have seen this year. Although we should note NK has some issues they should probably work out before they do the Mass Games ... like fix their hunger issues, etc.

DesignBoom notes, "historically developed alongside 19th century nationalist movements, 'mass games' or 'mass gymnastics' are group performance events involving the synchronized motion of thousands of performers, often in which performers collectively create large images in a human mosaic delineated by the colour of their dress or the holding up of coloured cards." These pictures were done by German photographer Werner Kranwetvogel for the 2005 games.
