Manuel Birnbacher's Civil War Portraits

Juxtapoz // Wednesday, 30 May 2012

In David Lynch's famed and well-loved television series Twin Peaks, Benjamin Horne re-enacts and reverses the outcome of the Civil War as a means of coping with a mental breakdown; by reversing the outcome of the war in the role of General Robert E. Lee, Horne is reverting the crisis that has troubled his own life. We're not sure if Manuel Birnbacher's reason for remixing and reworking these Civil War-era portraits has any similar connection to a personal crisis, but these prints are full of humor and satire, much like Horne's mental breakdown, both equally entertaining and full of a comic allusion to America's history.
